Down By The Creek - Companion Animal Sanctuary

News

Our precious Yeller had to have a tumor removed from his foot recently.  Thankfully, it was benign and he'll be back visiting folks very soon.

12/30/2014:  Our precious little Chloe passed away unexpectedly this morning due to  complications from a congenital liver defect.  In April, Chloe came to us with many issues, both physical and emotional.  But after a couple of weeks, she began going to pet therapy programs with the rest of the group and learned to lie quietly in a senior's lap while wrapped warmly in a baby blanket.  She became friends with all the other dogs at the Sanctuary and they were careful to never step on her.   She was only at the Sanctuary for about eight months, but, in that short time, she touched hundreds of lives and she knew love and kindness every day.  It's amazing how such a tiny dog can leave such a huge hole in our lives.

9/2014:  This was Mikey, a tortoise whom we knew for only a few hours.  He came to us after a frantic call from a teacher at a local school.  "He's dying," she said.  "I can't watch him die."  In fact, she had been watching him die for many months, possibly even a year.  He had numerous injuries to his head and was severely dehydrated.  Early medical attention may have saved him.  As it was, he died in Debbie's hands after an 11th hour attempt to revive him.

Rest in peace, Mikey... we are sorry for all your unnecessary pain and suffering.

(Many thanks to Aquatic Environments for all their help in trying to save Mikey.)

6/10/2014:  It is with heavy hearts that we let you know of the passing of one of our family last month.  Lacy never lived at the Sanctuary, but was the beloved pet of Sue Herrera, one of our volunteers.  She rescued Sue in early 2007 and remained by her side every day after that, helping her through four years of caring for her mother following a debilitating stroke.  Then, when she started her pet therapy work, her true calling became apparent.  In a nursing home, she would stand quietly beside a wheelchair while the occupant talked to her or petted her.  She had many names in the dementia wards, as people called her by the name of a dog they had owned decades ago.  At a preschool, she would lie calmly in the middle of a group of toddlers, letting them grab her fur or ears, never minding.  She touched hundreds of lives over the years. She was one in a million...
We miss her terribly.

Chloe

Chloe, our newest addition

She came to us very thin (2.2 pounds!) and anxious after spending her days trying to outrun toddlers at a day care center.  We had her vaccinated and next will be getting her spayed and having dental work done after she puts on some weight.  Could you help with her medical bills?  Anything would be appreciated.

Our skunk, Sam, recently had surgery to remove a large tumor on his tail, plus he needed eye medications.  The total was about $250.
